Why Hover wants you
At Hover, we’re transforming how homeowners, contractors, and insurance professionals design, scope, and improve properties using AI, 3D data, and modern software experiences. We’re looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help scale our Core UX team, focused on solving foundational customer experience challenges across Hover’s platform. You’ll work on the highest impact problems for our small business customers in an environment with significant ownership and autonomy.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity and enjoys turning undefined customer problems into intuitive, scalable product experiences. You’ll partner closely with engineering, product, and design leaders to shape technical direction, lead complex initiatives, and help establish the systems, culture, and engineering practices of a rapidly growing team.
You will contribute by
Starting with customer obsession. What are customers trying to accomplish? Where are they getting stuck? How can we make complex workflows feel simple and intuitive? You’ll lead through discovery, collaboration, and execution — diving into ambiguous product areas, partnering closely with product and design, and helping shape solutions from early concept through launch and iteration.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll work across the stack — primarily in Ruby on Rails, React, and React Native — building scalable systems and polished user experiences that power Hover’s core platform and solve meaningful problems for our customers. You’ll also help improve shared systems, mentor engineers, and raise the quality bar across the team.
On our team, you may work on:
- Improving onboarding experiences and helping customers adopt new features more effectively
- Building collaboration and feature-sharing workflows across teams and users
- Developing systems for displaying measurements and generating configurable outputs across 3D models and PDFs
- Scaling customer-facing experiences that improve activation, retention, and product usability
Your background includes
- 8+ years of experience building and scaling customer-facing applications across the stack, with deep expertise in React and backend frameworks like Ruby on Rails.
- Experience with—or strong interest in learning—React Native and contributing to production mobile applications.
- Strong experience building scalable APIs and distributed systems, with solid understanding of reliability, asynchronous processing, and cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP preferred).
- Comfort using modern developer tooling, including AI-assisted tools like Cursor or Claude, to improve productivity and engineering velocity.
- Experience working in zero-to-one or highly iterative product environments where customer feedback directly shapes product direction and engineering priorities.
- A proven track record of leading complex, high-impact initiatives from ambiguous problem spaces through technical design, production launch, and ongoing iteration.
- Strong product and engineering judgment — able to balance speed, scalability, quality, and customer impact while making thoughtful technical tradeoffs.
- Experience partnering closely with product, design, and data teams to shape solutions collaboratively, not just execute against predefined requirements.
- A strong ownership mindset with experience mentoring engineers, improving shared systems, and raising the quality bar through technical leadership and collaboration.
- A genuine interest in mentoring others and contributing to a strong, healthy engineering culture.
Bonus Points:
- You’ve built internal tooling, shared systems, or platform capabilities used across multiple teams.
- You’ve worked on products involving 3D data, spatial systems, or geometry processing.
- You’ve supported industries like construction, field services, or other skilled trades.
Benefits

- Healthcare - Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and dependents
- Paid Time Off - Unlimited and flexible vacation policy
